New in Thailand
Whether you are visiting, staying a few months, or a local meeting someone new, a few habits make meeting people here safer.
Meet in public
- Meet the first times in a busy public place: a café, a mall or a night market. Date spots in the chat suggest places like that.
- Get there and back on your own: a taxi app, the BTS or MRT, or your own ride. Don't let someone you just met pick you up at your hotel or home.
- Tell a friend where you are going, or use the date safety kit in the app.
- Keep an eye on your drink, and on how much you drink.
Scams that target foreigners
- Someone you met online needs money for a "visa problem", a hospital bill, a family emergency or a ticket.
- An "investment", a trading app or a crypto tip, especially from someone you have never met.
- A bar, a gem shop or a "special price" that a new acquaintance insists on taking you to.
- Someone who says they are the police or immigration and asks you to pay online. Real officers do not ask for money by message.
Scams that target locals
- A foreigner who promises marriage, a job abroad or a visa, then asks for a fee, your documents or money "for the paperwork".
- Someone who asks you to receive or send money for them, or to open a bank account.
- Pressure to send intimate photos, then threats to share them. Stop, keep the messages, and report it.
If something goes wrong
- Police: 191 · Tourist Police (English spoken): 1155 · Online scams: 1441
- Your embassy or consulate helps with a lost passport, an arrest or an emergency: search for your country's embassy in Bangkok.
- Report the profile in the app. We act on every report, and the person is not told who reported them.
